The G.C. Burkhead Music Program provides students with engaging opportunities to create, perform, and explore music, while also encouraging them to grow as respectful citizens. Through singing, dancing, drama, and instrument playing, students learn to analyze and appreciate music from a variety of cultures and time periods. They explore the elements of music and its role in society—ceremonial, recreational, and artistic—building a deeper understanding of music as a form of global expression. Students in Kindergarten through Fifth Grade attend music class for one week at a time before rotating to other special areas like P.E., Art, STEM Lab, and Library. This schedule allows for rich, hands-on experiences with instruments such as ukuleles, recorders, electric pianos, steel drums, and a wide variety of percussion. Students are challenged to think creatively, move expressively, and remain open-minded as they explore the rich diversity of music around the world.
